Mesh Delivery
Mesh Delivery is a file distribution feature in SureMDM that improves the delivery of large applications and files to multiple managed devices. Instead of every device downloading the complete file directly from the server, devices can securely share downloaded file data with other eligible devices on the same network. This helps reduce internet bandwidth usage and speeds up deployments across large groups of devices.
It is enabled while deploying supported jobs. Once enabled, managed devices automatically discover eligible peers and optimize file downloads. If peer devices are unavailable, downloads continue from the server without requiring any additional user intervention.
- Mesh Delivery is available only for File Transfer and Install Application jobs.
- Mesh Delivery is available only when deploying over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- If no eligible peer devices are available, downloads automatically continue from the server.
Prerequisites
Before using Mesh Delivery, ensure the following:
- Devices are enrolled in SureMDM.
- Devices are online.
- Devices are connected using one of the supported network types:
- Wi-Fi Only
- Ethernet Only
- Wi-Fi or Ethernet Only
- Devices belong to the intended deployment group.
- The Mesh Delivery supported SureMDM Agent and 42Gears Mesh Client application are installed.
Mesh Delivery is only available for supported network conditions. If an unsupported network option is selected during deployment, the Mesh Delivery option remains unavailable.
Enabling Mesh Delivery
To enable Mesh Delivery while deploying a supported job:
Log in to the SureMDM Console.
Select the required device or device group.
Click Apply.
Select one or multiple supported jobs (File Transfer Job and/or Install Application Job).
Under Deploy Job On, select one of the following:
- Wi-Fi Only
- Ethernet Only
- Wi-Fi or Ethernet Only
Enable the Mesh Delivery checkbox.
Click Apply.
Once applied, devices automatically use Mesh Delivery whenever eligible peer devices are available. If peer devices are unavailable, the download automatically continues from the server.
How Mesh Delivery Works
When Mesh Delivery is enabled, devices download files from both eligible peer devices and the server. By downloading available file data from nearby peers, Mesh Delivery reduces external network data usage while maintaining efficient file distribution. If the required data is not available from peers, the remaining data is downloaded from the server.
The following describes how Mesh Delivery handles file downloads:
- Devices automatically discover eligible peer devices.
- Files are downloaded from eligible peer devices whenever available.
- Remaining data is downloaded from the server when required.
- If peer devices become unavailable, downloading automatically continues from the server.
SureMDM Mesh Client
The SureMDM Mesh Client application allows you to monitor and manage Mesh Delivery activities on a device.
The application includes the following sections:
- Active Downloads – Displays files that are currently being downloaded, along with their download progress and status. The download details also show the amount of data downloaded from peer devices and the server, helping you understand the download source and data usage.
- Active Sharing – Displays files that are currently being shared with eligible devices.
The following actions are available within the application:
- Pause Download - Temporarily stops an active download.
- Resume Download - Continues a paused download from where it was paused.
- Stop Sharing - Stops sharing the selected file with other eligible devices.
- Resume Sharing - Resumes sharing for the selected file.
- Export - Exports transfer logs for troubleshooting and auditing.
The following actions are handled automatically by Mesh Delivery:
- Devices download from peers whenever available.
- Downloads automatically continue from the server if peer devices are unavailable.
- Interrupted downloads resume when connectivity is restored.
- Devices joining the same deployment later can participate in Mesh Delivery if the same job is applied.
- Devices automatically begin sharing downloaded content with eligible peers when sharing is enabled.
Best Practices
For the best Mesh Delivery experience:
- Use Mesh Delivery when deploying large applications or files over supported network conditions.
- Ensure devices remain connected to the same network during deployment whenever possible.
- Use Mesh Delivery primarily for deployments involving multiple devices to maximize bandwidth savings.
